DoD STARBASE focuses on elementary students, primarily fifth graders. The goal is to motivate them to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as they continue their education. The academies primarily serve students that are historically under-represented in STEM.
STARBASE uses active learning instructional strategies. Students become directly involved in the educational process which maximizes their understanding and learning.
STARBASE is a 5-day, 25-hour program, designed to deliver STEM specific curriculum that meets state and national standards. The program is delivered at each program site and at no cost to the participating schools. Schools are responsible for any transportation costs.
The STARBASE program is primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. Individuals and foundations as well as civic and service groups also support STARBASE through financial and volunteer contributions. STARBASE receives no state funding.
We inspire creativity and hands-on learning with features you won't find in any other classroom. This learning takes place in a location students really want to come to where they may experience climbing on a Black Hawk Helicopter, touring a KC-135 Refueling Aircraft, Engine Shops, and Heavy Equipment Transportation Vehicles.
Kansas STARBASE has five locations: Kansas City, Manhattan, Salina, Topeka, and Wichita. DOD STARBASE programs are located in multiple states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
